With it’s release in 2018, the Niken soon became one of the most polarizing motorcycles to have entered the market in recent memory. With it’s strange and futuristic front-end design, the Niken was Yamaha’s attempt to display riding technology on a scale that had only been seen in concept bikes previously. With a coined “new type of agility and controllability”, the newly designed front-end offered a stable and confidence inspiring ride for the user, both in adverse conditions or otherwise.
The Niken was shaped around the ever-popular MT-09 engine, a 847cc inline-triple that was good for 113 bhp and 64.6 ft-lb. Niken meaning ‘two swords’, was meant to emulate the style at which a sword master would manipulate their blades – working in perfect harmony to provide a dynamic and invigorating new way of riding. The GT version of the Niken came standard with a plethora of upgrades over the base model, including: two 25-litre semi-soft panniers, a center stand ideal for any ‘touring’ motorcycle, heated grips, a taller windscreen, comfort seat, an additional 12v socket, cruise control, quickshifter, traction control, and a slipper clutch.
As for actual tech, the Niken features 4 total KYB inverted forks (2 for each wheel), offering adjustable rebound and compression, while the rear came with a standard fully-adjustable monoshock, similar to the one found in the MT-09. This whole package comes together in a pairing Yamaha has coined their new Leaning Multi-Wheeler (LMW). Abhi got a chance to ride the Yamaha Niken in 2019, you can find his thoughts on it here.
