Description

Additional photos are available here for your perusal.

When it debuted, Ducati called the V4 R the “maximum expression of Ducati’s racing DNA, more similar to a racing prototype than any other bike.” At the time, it was the most expensive machine the Bologna firm offered.

Expectedly, the V4 R came heaped with top-shelf components, including Öhlins 43mm NPX25-30 forks up front and a TTX36 shock at the rear, some Brembo Stylema calipers, a STM EVO-SBK dry clutch, an adjustable aluminum swingarm, and a set of forged aluminum Marchesinis. By far the most apparent feature, however, was the winged aero package designed by Ducati Corse.

For the engine, Ducati utilized its 998cc Desmosedici Stradale R V4 to comply with WSBK regulations. Designed to push the limits of track performance, it boasted a lighter build and improved intake efficiency when compared to the 1,103cc Demosedici Stradale of the V4S. On the road, it was capable of putting down 221hp and 91lb-ft of torque. With the race kit installed, riders could bump output up to as much as 234hp.

Keeping everything in check was an impressive suite of electronic aids based around a six-axis Bosch IMU: along with lean-sensitive ABS, traction control, wheelie control, and slide control, you also got adjustable engine braking and ride modes.

As VisorDown put it in its review: “Out on the open road – and the track – the R is as easy going at low speeds and comfortable to ride as the lesser spec’d V4S, with the carbon tipped winglets that peek around the fairing sides being the only clue to the monster that lies within… It’s ballistically fast and like the V4S it’s a physical struggle to feed in the next gear before the 999cc engine slams into the rev-limiter as if it’s slapping you round the face for forgetting to change already. This is what a Ducati should feel like to ride, physical, demanding and engaging, but my god is it rewarding when you get it right!”
