If you’re even casually invested in going-ons of the industry, then Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire is a bike that needs no introduction. As the most marked departure to come from the Bar and Shield since the company’s inception, it was a model that divided motorcyclists en masse — especially because of its claimed 146 miles of city range.

In its review, Cycle World said, “The more you ride the LiveWire, the more you enjoy and appreciate it for what it is. Great ergonomics, a lot of fun, and gobs of usable, instant power to crush nearly any automobile off the line. It’s also beautifully finished, as you would expect of a company that has tirelessly dedicated more than 100 years to building premium motorcycles. It’s not, however, a motorcycle built to aimlessly explore back roads, and you should check the availability of charging stations twice before setting out for a journey.”

What the LiveWire lacked in juice (at least compared to a traditional IC engine), however, it more than made up for in performance. In combination with the 24kWh battery, the longitudinally-mounted electric motor made 105 horsepower. Thanks to the instantaneous 116lb-ft of torque, 0-60mph took a mere three seconds. Come time to stop the bike’s 544-pound heft, a set of four-piston Brembo Monoblocs took care of things up front while a set of two piston calipers handled the rear.

In order to keep things rubber-side down, Harley fitted the LiveWire with a slew of state-of-the-art rider aids. As part of the Reflex Defensive Rider Systems, you got traction control, cornering ABS, rear-wheel lift mitigation, and even drag-torque slip control. To ensure an easier transition to EV riding (and to simulate the feel of engine braking) the LiveWire also benefitted from adjustable regenerative braking.

As Road & Track put it in its review, “The LiveWire is a fantastic bike. It offers a unique and exciting riding experience that can’t be matched by internal-combustion alternatives. At no point during my time with the LiveWire did I wish I was riding a gas-powered machine.”
