The Honda Monkey actually started in 1961 as a ride at the Tama Tech amusement park, a former venture owned by a Honda subsidiary that was all about promoting the “joys of driving”. The name came from the fact that riders looked like monkeys on the diminutive machines, but the bikes were so popular that Honda created a production version in 1964. Japan and Europe got to play with it first, but American riders got their chance in 1968 with a model designated the Z50A. While it was called the Monkey in other markets, the little Honda was called the Mini Trail in the US, and that’s the bike you surely think of when you see the 2019 Monkey.
The underpinnings are pulled from the Honda Grom – a 124.9cc air-cooled thumper paired with a 4-speed transmission. But the Monkey adds classic styling pulled from multiple years of the old bike – paint scheme from the ’68, lights from the ’69, suspension and exhaust from the ’72, plus you’ve got the “Old Wing” logos, tall handlebars, and Honda logo on the rear of the thick seat.
