Two years after being acquired by KTM, Husqvarna launched its 701 Enduro in 2015. At the time, it was one of the largest-capacity dirtbikes you could buy, a thumping 74hp 692cc single that was originally responsible for powering the 690 Duke. The formula proved a resounding success, as the model went largely unchanged for the next few years.
In 2020, Husqvarna added to the 701 lineup with the Enduro Long Range (LR). Billed as a do-it-all “travel bike” rather than an out-and-out enduro machine, it built on the popular 701 platform with an additional 12L (3.2-gallon) auxiliary fuel tank at the front. When combined with the bike’s rear-mounted 13L (3.4-gallon) tank, the resulting 25-liter (6.6-gallon) capacity allowed riders to cover some 300 miles between fill-ups. Even more impressive, though, was the fact that the bike weighed just 381lbs.
Beyond its expanded range, the LR was prepped for travel in other ways, too. Suspension-wise, it featured a set of fully-adjustable 48mm WP XPLOR forks and a WP XPLOR rear shock, each good for 250mm of wheel travel.
What’s more, Husqvarna fitted the 701 Enduro LR with a slew of state-of-the-art tech. Along with ride-by-wire throttle input and Bosch cornering ABS, it also boasted lean-angle-sensitive traction control, switchable ride modes, a slipper clutch, and a factory quick shifter. Riders could even monitor (and switch between) fuel tanks from a handlebar-mounted control.
As Adventure Bike Rider puts it, “the 701 Enduro shines as a bike that will take you relatively long distances by road before eating up the trails you’ve travelled all that way to ride, with no need to carry your motorcycle in a van or trailer. It’s also the bike I’d choose if I was heading off to Europe for a few weeks or months to tackle stretches of the Trans Euro Trail.
In fact, with a few additions like a screen, a luggage rack, and my favourite creature comfort, heated grips, you could turn this ‘travel enduro’ into the most off-road capable adventure bike around. It’s perfect for a trip around the world along the path less trodden. What an adventure that would be.”
