With a clear goal of entering the middleweight adventure bike segment, KTM first unveiled the 790 Adventure R at EICMA in 2018. With a clear division between the 690 Enduro R and the heftier 1290 Super Adventure, it was clear there needed to be a motorcycle to bridge the gap between both extremes. Stemming from the ever-popular Duke 790 – also known as ‘The Scalpel’ – the 790 Adventure R shared the same 799cc parallel-twin engine, with some minor tweaks to accommodate the different riding styles from each model. The Adventure R was good for a respectable 94 horsepower and 64 ft/lb. of torque, making the long distances to the trails a breeze, while also offering plenty of low-end grunt to power through any difficult terrain once there.
Built with a steel trellis frame, the Adventure R was made with handling in mind, offering exceptional on-and-offroad handling capabilities. As synonymous as KTM has become with upspec models, the Adventure R was no different – coming packed with a ‘Rally-Ready’ design meant to tackle anything and everything it’s rider could throw at it. The R variant came with longer travel suspension, a larger front wheel (21″), and a ‘Rally’ riding mode, which allowed full jurisdiction over features such as throttle mapping, traction control, and even cornering ABS. We’ll leave it to Dirt Bike Magzine to sum the 790 Adventure R up: “The KTM 790 Adventure R sets a new standard among adventure bikes for off-road performance.”
