When Triumph revived the Scrambler name back in 2006, the model was more of a road bike in disguise than a true off-road-worthy option. In fact, the Hinckley-based manufacturer even went so far as to introduce the “Street Scrambler” for those who wanted to look the part without venturing beyond anything other than groomed dirt roads.

For this reason, some motorcycle enthusiasts consider the Triumph Scrambler a scrambler only in name. This all changed when Triumph introduced the Scrambler 1200 XE and XC in 2019. Both true performance-oriented versions of its retro-styled twin, each bike featured a 1200cc engine making 89hp and 81ft-lbs of torque – a marked increase over their Bonneville and Street Scrambler siblings.

Of the two, the XC was billed as a slightly more pavement-minded offering. Accordingly, it came in slightly lower, with a shorter swingarm and wheelbase that translated to livelier on-road riding. Equipment-wise, it came standard with a set of 45mm Showa inverted forks up front and some Öhlins piggyback shocks at the rear, each offering nearly eight inches of travel. Per Cycle World’s first ride review: “Even with the wet pavement this is where the XC came into its own, outshining the dirt champ XE. With a lower seat height, shorter wheelbase, and skinnier bars the XC was at home blasting through corners with a slightly lower CG. Handling is quick with an easy tip-in and a solid feel while leaned over, even when bumps try to upset the balance. ”
