Arriving in the states in 2020, the MT-03 had already become a fan favorite in the European market by the time the 2nd generation touched US soil. Built off the R3 platform, the MT-03 shared the same steel-tubing frame but came with a less aggressive rake, handlebars, and a distinct lack of fairings to complete the naked bike look.
With MT standing for ‘Master of Torque’, the MT-03 offered a sporty parallel twin package with 41 horsepower on tap and 21 ft/lbs. of torque in a compact 370 pounds. New for the 2020 edition were upside forks that offered significantly better damping characteristics, revised ergonomics, a new front brake caliper design for enhanced braking feel, a LCD gauge, and a slight decrease in weight from the older European model. Finally, to truly bring the MT-03 into the MT line of models that Yamaha manufactures, the company revised the headlight design to more resemble the futuristic and aggressive look of the larger motorcycles, replaced the original bulbs with LED running lights.
