Click here for an VINData Motorcycle History Report on this 2021 Harley-Davidson Softail Fat Bob.
Back in the early 1980s, a mechanical engineer by the name of Bill Davis had been experimenting with a V-twin frame design that gave riders the custom chopper look with the added benefit of some hidden rear shocks. Harley-Davidson liked Davis’ design so much, in fact, that they bought his design patents and brought him onboard to perfect the concept.
Come 1984, Davis’ frame finally made it to production in the form of the Softail. Like his design, it appeared to be rigid at first glance; beneath the curvaceous rear fender, however, it featured some pull-shocks. Needless to say, the bike proved immensely popular — it quickly became one of the best-selling models in Harley-Davidson’s lineup. Between the added comfort and the improved performance, it was — in a word — a revelation.
For the engine, Harley took the opportunity to debut its 1,340cc Evolution V-twin. Along with some added displacement, it boasted better build quality and sounder engineering. In practice, this meant that it leaked less, ran cleaner, and idled cooler. Output came in at 58hp — enough to take riders to a top speed just over 100mph.
Fast forward to 2018 when the Milwaukee firm combined the Softail the Dyna family and released a new lineup to coincide with the company’s 115th anniversay. The Fat Bob left the Dyna platform, and was now built on the Softail frame. Though still a cruiser, it was the sportiest model of the new Softails with the best cornering clearance, best steering, stiffer frame, and offered buyers their choice of 107 or 114-cube Milwaukee Eight engines.
Manufactured November 2020, this example is VIN: 1HD1YLK21MB012177. Engine YLKM012177. The seller is the original owner and purchased the bike new in 2021 from Huntington Beach Harley-Davidson and states, “I love that bike to death, I really don’t want to sell it at all. That thing is a monster of a Harley. It is insanely fast and stupidly fun. It’s hard to explain in words how that bike feels until you ride it and can’t get the grin off your face.”
The odometer shows 3,359 kilometers (2,087 miles).
