When Krämer first unveiled its GP2R Proto back in 2018 at the Barber Vintage Festival, the bike was little more than a dressed-up KTM 790 Duke. Stripped of its orange livery and without its factory rider aids, it nevertheless managed to impress Motorcycle.com: ” It scrubs speed like nobody’s business, changes direction with ease, and is still plenty quick while still on its side… Opening the gas early and often is mandatory on the GP2, and I was happy to oblige to hear the 790 Twin roar.”
Going on five years later, the marque’s GP2 890 R model makes for quite a different machine. Now based around KTM’s 130hp 890 engine (mostly stock, except for a PASC Slipper Clutch and an adjustable quick-shifter) it comes wrapped in a package of race-ready components.
The trellis frame is made from a CrMo steel for increased stiffness, with an adjustable rake that can be tailored to a rider’s desired fit. Instead of storing the gas in the tank, Krämer opted to put the fuel cell in the tail. The XPE plastic subframe holds a little over four gallons.
For its suspension, the GP2 890 R rides on a set of WP Apex Pro 7543 closed-cartridge forks up front and a WP Apex Pro 7746 shock at the rear. Along with adjustable length and preload, you also get some quick-change axles for efficient wheel swaps. Brembo handles the braking fore and aft — through a set of M50 calipers (mated to some 290mm discs) and a P2 caliper paired to a 230mm disc.
Tying everything together is a set of lightweight fiberglass bodywork that comes reinforced with carbon and kevlar. Thanks to the relocation of the tank (a space now occupied by the airbox) and the forged aluminum Dymag wheels, total weight for the bike comes in at just 309lbs.
As CycleNews put it, “This is the kind of racer you buy if you’re looking at a long-term project. Not many people have the cash for a GP2, but if you think of this as a turnkey racer you plan on using for the next 10 years in Twins racing classes, like those that compete in AHRMA, it suddenly becomes a viable option.”
