Additional photos of this 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 are available here for your perusal.
The Yamaha Ténéré has a long history dating back to 1983 – some U.S. based riders might not be quite as familiar with this as the bike was not available stateside for many of its iterations. The XT600 90’s variant of the Ténéré was as close as most U.S. riders would get to the bike that Yamaha sold successfully in Europe and other regions of the world. It was inspired by the Paris-Dakar racers of the late 70’s and early 80’s with big bore single and twin cylinder engines known for their power and reliability being fed by oversized fuel tanks and featuring styling cues like large twin headlights. Yamaha had success at Paris-Dakar, winning six times with their larger 750 and 850cc parallel twin versions and on the showroom floor the bikes sold well in both versions of the single cylinder Ténéré and the larger-engined Super Ténéré.
The Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré was a hit when it was released in the United States by the Iwata, Japan based company in 2010. The Ténéré had been absent from the U.S. market and buyers were eager for a large displacement adventure bike to take on the European brands that had dominated the ADV segment. With its long history of smaller engined models in the Ténéré line and a reputation for outstanding build quality the Yamaha Super Ténéré quickly ignited demand for smaller cc bike that would offer not only a more off-road focused experience with lighter weight and more dirt capabilities but also with a lower price tag. Having been denied the 2006 version of the XT660Z in the United States, demand for the new T7 was brisk and while the wait was long, it was worth it.
The new Yamaha T7 went on sale in 2020 in Europe but riders in the United States had to wait another year before it would be released, and those who did not act quickly found that the bike was already sold out. Additional inventory has been slow to get onto dealers floors with supply chains still struggling under the response to COVID-19. Those who were lucky enough to get one found out how good Yamaha’s new middleweight ADV bike really is and why it has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from testers. Powered by a 689cc parallel twin that puts out a respectable 73 horsepower, the liquid cooled and fuel injected CP2 engine has a very linear power band and boasts incredible reliability with 25,000 mile service intervals. With only around 450 lbs to push around the Yamaha has more than enough motivation and while lacking the all-out power of some of its rivals the Yamaha makes up for it in its simplicity, ease of use and a very robust nature. It is designed first and foremost to be usable by your average rider, reliable, and able to do it all without breaking the bank.
The new Ténéré comes standard with fully adjustable KYB suspension front and rear as well as Brembo-supplied brakes with switchable ABS slowing the 21″ front and 18″ rear wheels. The rest of the bike is fairly standard, no fancy riding modes or electronic gimmicks, just a torquey engine with good gearing mated to a nimble chassis. The dash is a simple LCD affair that gives you an easy to read display with no annoying menus or complicated options. The Ténéré 700 excels at being a reliable and powerful dirt focused adventure bike that can also comfortably turn in long days on the tarmac while maintaining the type of reliability that you expect from a Yamaha and that you will really appreciate when you are out of cell phone range!
