BMW first put the CE 04 on the public’s radar with the unveiling of the Concept Link scooter in 2017. Envisioned as the eventual successor to the C Evolution, it boasted an undeniably futuristic appearance and some novel tech like internet connectivity and a wirelessly-linked, gesture-controlled jacket.
Come 2020, the concept resurfaced once again — this time dubbed the Definition CE 04. As with its predecessor, the scooter featured a large touchscreen instrument panel, full smartphone connectivity, and a long, low-slung design. The jacket made another appearance as well, though it ditched the motion tech in favor of some built-in lights and wireless phone charging.
In February 2022, the CE 04 finally went on sale, largely unchanged from the Definition concept that came before it. For the powertrain, BMW borrowed a shortened version of the electric motor used in its plug-in hybrid X3 models. Capable of 42hp and 46lb-ft of torque, it could accelerate to 31mph in 2.6 seconds before topping out at a max speed of 75mph. Thanks to the positioning of the motor and the battery in the floorboards, BMW managed to keep the center of gravity low.
Charging-wise, users could expect 0-100% to take anywhere from four hours and 20 minutes to one hour and 40 minutes depending on the type of charger. With Level 2 charging, however, 20-80% top-ups took a claimed 45 minutes. Of course, the driving modes — Eco, Rain, Road, and Dynamic — determined how far your juice would stretch.
As Cycle World put in their initial review: “In an age where some gasoline bikes still can’t get the transition from closed to part throttle right, the CE 04 makes a mockery of them, transitioning from regenerative deceleration to punchy acceleration with an intuitive, smooth feel that took no time at all to get comfortable with. It lets you ride through the city and rarely trouble the brakes, doing all your speed control on the throttle.”
