When it debuted for the 2012 model year, BMW’s flagship tourer K1600 GTL impressed just about every reviewer – including earning Best Touring Bike by Cycle World and Motorcycle of the Year award from RoadRUNNER magazine, Motorcycle.com, and Rider Magazine. Rider said: “History will look back upon both the BMW K 1600 GTL and GT as ground-breaking machines in the luxury and sport-touring motorcycle segments. They share an in-line 6-cylinder engine that out-guns anything in either class, and have unique features that are right out of the future, like a dynamic-leveling Xenon headlight and fingertip-close Multi-Controller for scrolling through the many menu-accessed functions.”

The heart is a 1,649cc in-line six-cylinder engine with four valves per cylinder and a 12.2:1 compression ratio, 72mm bore, 67.5mm stroke, and cylinder sleeves spaced just 5mm apart. BMW says the whole unit, including clutch, gearbox, and alternator, weighs 226 pounds and is 21.9 inches wide, making it the lightest, slimmest Six over 1000cc ever produced for a motorcycle.

Fast forward a few years and BMW had expanded the line up to also include the B (Bagger) as well as the Grand America. The hot rod of the bunch was the GT, and for 2022 it got a significant refresh – highlights included a 10.25″ TFT display,
a new audio system, adaptive LED headlights, updates to the semi-active suspension like automatic load leveling, and tweaks two the engine for Euro5 compliance. HP remained the same at 160 (though it hit that peak a little earlier in the rev range and torque was bumped up to 132 foot-pounds.
