BMW first launched the R1250RT in 2018 as a replacement for its aging R1200 platform. Building upon the German moto manufacturer’s prestigious touring bike pedigree, it brought a freshly redesigned engine and a slew of aesthetic and technological refinements. Beyond making an extra 27hp (~136hp up from ~109hp), this also meant that the new RT gained improved low-end power, more mid-range grunt, and a snarling top-end.
Moreover, the R1250RT makes for a markedly better handling — and more versatile — bike than its predecessor. As RevZilla put it in their review of the Police Edition, “Between the fully linked brakes, anti-dive Telelever front suspension, excellent fueling, and the ability to adjust suspension behavior on the fly, the RT can be many different animals.”
While the refinements have been mostly incremental since the bike’s debut, the 2021 model year did introduce some notable changes to the user experience. Like many other bikes in the BMW range, the R1250RT got treated to a TFT dash. It also benefitted from some revised aerodynamics and sleeker styling in the form of a larger windscreen and some wind-cheating bodywork. For 2022, BMW kept the bike almost identical.
