Back in 2019, Indian shook up its stagnant cruiser lineup with an all-new model dubbed the FTR. As you’d expect from its naming conventions, the bike borrowed much of its design language from flat track racing; beyond the short, upswept tail, it also featured dual mufflers, wide riser bars, and a sporty paint scheme. For all of their aesthetic appeal, though, the 19-inch/18-inch wheel combo and dirt-ready rubber did nothing for the bike’s performance on the road.

With the 2022 model, Indian went back to the drawing board and made some revisions to improve the FTR as a rider. Though styling went mostly unchanged, the bike ditched its oversized wheels and knobbies in favor of some 17-inch cast aluminum units wrapped in Metzeler Sportec M9 RR tires. Elsewhere, Indian reduced the suspension travel by 1.2 inches and swapped out the bars for a set of ProTapers that brought the grips two inches lower and 1.5 inches narrower. Taken together, such changes dropped the seat height by 1.4 inches and dramatically changed the bike’s center of gravity. On the road, the sportier ergonomics allowed riders to take full advantage of the 1,203cc V-twin and its 120hp and 87lb-ft of torque.

As the top-spec trim in the FTR lineup, the R Carbon came with a number of exclusive add-ons. Suspension was handled via a fully-adjustable Öhlins setup and the throaty V-Twin funneled its sound through a pair of black Akrapovič mufflers. Expectedly, there was ample carbon fiber to be had, and the model featured modern conveniences such as electronic rider aids, a TFT touchscreen dash, and an upgraded seat cover.

As Revzilla found in its review: “There’s no getting around it: This is an aggressive motorcycle. It wants to go fast all the time, it’s not happy in foul weather, and it sulks when riding at a relaxed pace.”
