Suzuki has a long and storied history of making DR dual sports that stems all the way back to the 1980s. However, the DR-Z400 first arrived in 2000, bringing with it modern conveniences like water cooling, electric starting, an updated instrument cluster, and even full lights and signals depending on your choice of trim.
Just five years later, Suzuki introduced the DR-Z400SM, a street-only Supermoto model as designated by the “SM” suffix. Along with smaller, better-handling 17″ wheels and road tires (other DR-Zs use a 21″ front and an 18″ rear), Suzuki also gave the SM upgraded brakes, inverted forks, and an RMZ-style swingarm.
As Revzilla found in its review, “The DR-Z makes a game out of every ride and turns every road into a track. With its low-ish weight, upright seating, and dirt-bike-like handling and power delivery, it’s literally the most nimble thing on the road.”
