After a seven-year hiatus in the North American market, the 450 SMR was brought back to the US and Canada for 2021 as an all-new model that was based on the excellent 450 SX-F motocross bike. As a bike that you could take straight from the dealer floor to the racetrack, the stock components on the SMR are impressive.

These include a top-shelf Brembo M50 caliper (upgraded on this bike), Galfer brake rotor, Suter slipper clutch, WP Xact fork, Alpina tubeless spoked wheels, and a CNC-machined triple clamp. Other aspects of the supermoto are quite similar to the 450 SX-F such as the chromium-molybdenum steel frame, aluminum subframe and swingarm, and most of the bodywork. Two mapping options came from KTM and the whole packaged had a top speed of 90 miles per hour and tipped the scales at 232 pounds. Upon release, reviews praised the bike for its wide range of suspension adjustment settings, excellent stopping power, and slipper clutch.

2023 brought a big update including a new frame, new swingarm, updated shock, new triple clamps, updated fork, new footpegs, new aluminum subframe, and an updated engine that was repositioned for better mass centralization.

2025 brought even more updates to the SMR and the SX-F it was based on: they developed another all-new frame, WP Xact closed-cartridge spring fork (upgraded on this bike), new rear linkage, a switch to Metzeler K1 soft compound tires, and a bump in power to 63 horsepower thanks to a redesigned airbox.
