During the early 20th century, board track racing represented the pinnacle of two-wheeled motorsport in the United States. As the name implies, courses consisted of circular or oval tracks, typically comprising wooden planks. Because they were inexpensive to construct, they were incredibly popular venues. However, this also meant that they were very difficult to maintain — most board tracks lasted just three years before being abandoned due to safety concerns.
Amongst the main competitors in the board track racing scene was the Cyclone, a 996cc v-twin model produced by the Joerns Motor Manufacturing Company. The original bike boasted a top speed in excess of 100mph, beating out an Excelsior for the one-mile speed record title. Despite its capability, the then-high price of $350 forced Joerns to discontinue the model as the market was swamped with more affordable alternatives.
Today, only six Cyclones are said to have survived from the original 300-bike run. Steve McQueen famously owned an example that sold for $775,000 in March 2015.
The bike you see before you was built by Steel Buffalo Motors as a tribute to the original Cyclones. It boasts an aluminum frame, an 80cc two-stroke single, and pedals to start.
There is no VIN stamping that we can find. The seller purchased the bike as a display piece and kept it in his living room. He notes that “anyone who came to the house always commented on how cool this bike was as being one of Steve McQueen’s first motos.”
There is no odometer; true mileage is unknown.
