Honda first fielded a factory AMA Superbike team back in 1980. At the time, most of the major manufacturers were focused on the International Grand Prix; however, the 500cc class was completely dominated by two-strokes, and the Big Red wanted to pivot towards the States in order to help market its liter bike offerings. With Freddie Spencer at the helm, it was no time before Honda began making a name for itself.
American Honda’s first championship win came in 1984 thanks to the efforts of Fred Merkel aboard a VF750. For the next two years, he continued to repeat on his success, winning the series in 1985 and 1986. Wayne Rainey and Bubba Shobert extended the streak even further, taking the title for in 1987 and 1988.
Eventually, Honda did find success once again — first with Miguel Duhamel in 1995, and subsequently with Ben Bostrom in 1998 and Nicky Hayden in 2002. Facing financial hardship after the 2007 housing crisis, American Honda pulled out of AMA Superbike for the 2009 season.
This bodywork is from the 2008 season. It includes an unnumbered front fairing as well as an unnumbered tail section.
