Additional photos of this Honda CB400F are available here for your perusal.
The CB400F wasn’t as fast as its competition, but it was smoother, quieter, and more efficient. It also had some of the most beautiful production exhaust headers ever built, which are known by some as the “waterfall pipes” and are so iconic that Honda brought them back for the new CB650F!
Featuring a relatively rare-for-the-time six-speed transmission, the CB400F was styled somewhat like a cafe racer and had an engine that produced 37 horsepower. Weighing just over 400 pounds, a rider could knock off the quarter mile in about 14.1 seconds. It’s a basic, classic bike that would be just fine serving as a lovely daily rider. For more information, check out this story on Motorcyclist where they call it “the first real sportbike“.
This example is VIN: CB400F1028238. The owner recently passed away and this is being sold by his estate. Unfortunately, the history of the bike is no longer known.
The odometer shows 7,736 miles.
In preparation for the listing, the seller had Steve rebuild the carbs and detail the bike. Steve says that the bike rides well, however he noted two noises. His guesses are below but he is not able to confirm them without taking apart the transmission.
1. there is a whining noise from the clutch side of the motor, he believes it may be the clutch input shaft bearing.
2. there is an intermittent metal-on-metal sound from the left side of the motor when the bike is leaned over to the left. He believes there may be there may be something loose in the transmission.
Modifications:

Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this Honda is offered on a clean California title that expired in October 2020. The California DMV website says that back fees are $133 to get it registered through October 2022, and the seller will cover that cost if the next owner is in California.
