Gilera was founded in Acore Italy outside Milan in 1909. After WWII, it was Gilera’s racers that grabbed headlines by dominating the World Motorcycling Championship, winning in the 500cc category six times in eight years. To pay the bills the company released lightweight bikes in the 125cc-150cc-175cc range in 1949 and these simple OHV singles proved top sellers throughout the 1950s and into the 1960s.
The name ‘Giubileo’ means Anniversary in Italian and was first used by Gilera in 1959 to celebrate the company’s Golden Jubilee. Gilera released the Giubileo first with 98cc or 124cc and soon followed with 150cc, 175cc, and 202cc versions.
The 98 had a OHV single that was good for 5.8 horsepower which was paired to a 5-speed transmission. With a curb weight of approximately 198 pounds, this little bike could reach nearly 50mph. Offered at an affordable price of 160,000 lire with multiple versions available to consumers such as Extra, Red, Sport, and Sei Giorni, the Giubileo was popular and nearly 60,000 units were sold until production ceased in 1970.
