Honda first introduced the QA50 in 1970 as a gateway model to bring young motorcyclists into the world of off-road riding. However, the real success of the minibike was its approachability — anyone could throw a leg over the lightweight, low-powered little motorcycle and have a laugh.
For this reason, Honda built the QA50 with a seat sized for both children and adults, a robust frame, and some conservative gearing. Powering the bike was a 50cc air-cooled OHV four-stroke. that produced just 1.8hp at 5,000rpm. Mated to a two-speed automatic transmission, it offered a masterclass in the merits of simplicity.
Up front, the bike featured just enough suspension to soak up the bumps; at the rear, it was limited to the chunky tire. Accordingly, many QA50s were ridden into the ground, whether it was because of kids ripping around like stunt riders or parents having a bit too much fun themselves. Whatever the case, what few bikes remain have proven highly collectable.
