Back in the 70s, executives at Honda felt like that purchasing a car was a family activity, but there wasn’t anything to keep children amused in their showrooms while their parents were shopping. They asked employees to come up with an idea to fix this, and the winner was a scooter that was powered by kicking a pedal that pulled a chain driving the rear wheel.
Honda sold roughly 2,000 units in Japan as a test, and then they offered the “Kick-N-Go” in the United States (exclusively through Honda dealerships) in 1974. The first model was a 3-wheeler for kids, but in 1976 they also offered a 2-wheeler for older kids and a larger 3-wheeler for adults, called the Kick-N-Go Senior. The same models were offered in Japan but under a different name: GOGO Roller Through. The adult model was the “7”.
Unfortunately, Honda stopped sales of these scooters in 1976 – the Online Bicycle Museum states that two children were killed while riding them and Honda ended up recalling several thousand units. We haven’t been able to verify that claim, though a few of us here at Iconic have tried it and no one here would call it objectively safe, either.
As Honda put it in the owner’s manual, “Kick-N-Go can be a terrific new experience for your children. It was developed and designed with fun and education in mind…”
“When treading the kick pedal, the arm draws the chain with a force of 2.5 times the downward pressure of the pump.”
This example is stamped with JQ40602. Abhi bought it four months ago from a private party in Ventura, California. He was always curious about these after seeing one at the Honda museum in Torrance and couldn’t help himself when one became available. He bought it so that everyone at Iconic could try it out – we’ve had our fun with it and now it’s time for a Honda fan to add to their collection!
Maintenance:
In preparation for the listing Abhi had the shop repair the steering head – the pivot was loose, so the shop drilled and reamed the bolt. Additionally, we serviced the chain.
Olly did the work, he notes the following in his condition report:
