Please Note: VINData incorrectly lists this as a 2013 model. Iconic has spoken with VINData and the problem lies within the NHTSA database and the redundancy of the 10th digit indicating year every 30 years, this is indeed a 1983.
Adam’s test ride video:
Depending on how you define “production”, Kawasaki was the first motorcycle manufacturer to roll out a turbocharged motorcycle. But as this OddBike article points out, Kawasaki’s effort was more of a quasi-aftermarket creation, and it wasn’t well-thought out either. Honda’s CX lineup is more deserving of the ‘first production turbo bike’ title, as it truly started the forced induction craze of the early 80s with the CX500.

The next year, Honda bumped up displacement to create the CX650 Turbo. Horsepower jumped to triple figures, enabling the bike to attain 140 miles per hour. It weighed 572 pounds and could return 45 miles per gallon.

“Off boost, the CX650T chuffs its way down the road like a mildly tuned 650 twin. On boost, it accelerates like an F-4 being blasted off the flight deck of the USS Enterprise by a steam catapult.” Rider Magazine, October 1983

While Kawasaki, and Suzuki also offered turbocharged competition, Yamaha and Honda were the most successful from a commercial standpoint. With that said, turbocharged production bikes never caught on, and only approximately 1,200 of these bikes ever came to the United States after one year of production.

Manufactured in November of 1982, this example is VIN: JH2RC1604DM000276.

The engine number is RC16E2000441.

The odometer shows 1,486 miles.
