An evolution of their popular Ninja 900, the Ninja 1000R was the fastest production motorcycle that Cycle World had ever tested at the time. From their January 1986 review: “One hundred fifty-nine miles an hour! We’re talking fast, here, as in the fastest production streetbike ever. Tucked-in and wrist locked, a Ninja 1000 rider with little regard for his driver’s license can cover the length of a football field in 1.3 seconds. Get caught, go directly to jail and sell the bike to pay your attorney’s fees.”
That sort of speed was possible thanks to the 997cc engine, which put out a claimed 125 horsepower. “Where the 900 bogs, the 1000 wheelies; where the 900 has to be revved, the 1000 tractors right up to its 10,500-rpm redline. Because of its long gearing, however. the 1000 does suffer in top-gear roll-on contests, necessitating a downshift or two in order to get things boiling.”
Cycle World concluded their review by noting “for now, the 1000 is as impressive a piece of Open-class sportbike hardware as you’re likely to find: less of a Ninja, sure, but more of an all-around motorcycle.”
This example is VIN: JKAZXCA15GB504595. The seller acquired it from a dealer in Wisconsin in 2013.
The odometer shows 20,876 miles.
The bike got a new chain and sprockets about 800 miles ago, however it has been sitting for the last three years. In preparation for the listing, the seller had us clean the carbs and install a new battery.
Our technician Daniel notes that there’s a manual fan switch as well as a slow weep from the petcock. He recommends that the next owner flush the coolant/oil/brake fluid, replace the air filter, install a new chain, replace the fork seals, install near rear brake pads, and install new tires.
Modifications:
Aftermarket grips.

The sale includes several spare parts (frame, black body panels, seats, radiator, red tank, red side panels, rear fender, forks, odometer with 7,976 miles) and one key.
It is riding on a Bridgestone Battlax BT45 front and Dunlop D404 rear from 2015.
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this Kawasaki is offered on a clean California title with registration that expired in January 2020.
The California DMV website states that it would cost $566 to get registration current through January of 2023.
In addition, the seller has a spare motor with roughly 7,000 miles on it available for $400 if the new owner is interested.
