Introduced in 1986, the Yamaha YSR80 is a much rarer big brother to the YSR50, a popular miniature motorcycle that even surprises knowledgeable motorcyclists when they discover the bikes can be plated and legally run on the street in certain states.
The 79cc two-stroke motor was good for approximately 8-9 horsepower, and it was paired with a 5-speed transmission, front disc/rear drum brake, and styling that truly made it feel like part of Yamaha’s sportbike family. The 1986 model was offered in two color schemes: red/white and blue/yellow. The YSR80 saw more time in the spotlight predominantly due to its larger powerplant and its more performance-oriented components — such as the front disc brake.
In Japan, the little bike appealed to those looking for a frugal and funky way to commute to and from work in the thick of the city proper. Across the seas, it mostly appealed to junior racers looking to hone their skills and build their familiarity with bikes. The YSR80 was one of many motorcycles to come out of the 80’s that was known for being different and fun, but make no mistake — this tiny terror would stand out in any crowd.
We have not been able to find a photo or video of it, but Wayne Rainey supposedly rode a Marlboro-branded YSR50 in a 1-lap promotional race at Phillip Island in 1986. In Yamaha’s home market of Japan, they offered a limited run of “Marlboro Edition” YSRs that had a decal package matching what Rainey rode. You could even order matching gear (helmet/suit/gloves).
This example is VIN: 2GX008238. It came to Iconic as an import from Japan; prior history is not known.
The odometer shows 745 kilometers (462 miles).
Maintenance:
In preparation for the listing, the seller had us free the seized engine, rebuild the carb, replace the battery, and service the chain. We also replaced the fork seals, drained the exhaust, installed an air box, repaired the flasher relay, and changed the engine oil, the transmission oil, and the brake fluid. Finally, we gave the bike an intensive detail and installed new Dunlop TT93 GP Pro tires with date codes of 3321 and 2022.
Yonni, Steve, and Alex did the work, they note the following in their condition report:
