Description

Additional photos of this Kawasaki GPX400R are available here for your perusal.

Kawasaki introduced the GPX400R in 1987 as the intended successor to its veritable GPZ400R. As things would turn out, however, both models ended up being produced in parallel until they were discontinued in favor of the ZZ-R400 and the ZXR400 in 1990. Because of its three-year production life, the GPX is a rare sight nowadays — even in Japan.

Despite its similarities to the GPZ, the GPX featured several notable differences (some of which were even carried over in the models’ final year of production). For one, Kawasaki ditched the tubular aluminum chassis in favor of a FAST steel frame. What’s more, the engine was redesigned and lightened in order to squeeze out some more power and a higher top speed. Most significantly, though, were the changes to the braking and suspension — Kawasaki fitted the GPX400R with upgraded two-piston calipers and replaced the automatic variable dampening system (AVDS) with its improved Electronic Suspension Control System (ESCS).

This example is VIN: ZX400F000991.

The odometer shows 7,075 kilometers (4,396 miles).

The owner imported this bike from Japan several years ago with the intent of reselling it in the US. He had it running and for sale at the 2019 Barber Vintage Festival. It did not sell there, and due to COVID the bike has been in storage since. At a minimum, it will need a new battery and the carbs cleaned to run. To ride, it would likely also need a full fluid flush and new tires. We have not inspected it.

Modifications:
This GPX appears to be stock.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Dunlop K205 tires which have aged out.

The sale includes one key (the other keys do not fit and may be for a different bike).
