One of the least common Kawis produced, the ZX-4 was announced at the 27th Tokyo Motor Show in 1987 and went on sale the following year in an attempt to take advantage of the replica boom popular amongst young Japanese riders.
At 335lbs dry, the ZX-4 was the lightest in the 400 class, and the water-cooled DOHC four-valve power plant generated approximately 59 horse power. The aluminum frame was dubbed e-Box with the “e” short for egg – the shape of the engine when viewed from above the frame.
Although winning the Suzuka four-hour endurance race (SP class) in 1988, sales were disappointing at a reported 6,138 and the model was only sold one year before Team Green shifted the 400 flagship model to the ZXR400 in 1989.
