Click here for an CycleVIN Motorcycle History Report on this 1990 Ducati 851. Additional photos are available here for your perusal.

Introduced in 1987, the 851 made Ducati relevant in motorcycle racing again, earning a WSBK championship in 1990 and launching a series of V-Twin superbikes that would last for more than three decades.

The 851cc L-Twin featured fuel injection, liquid cooling, and desmo 4V heads, producing 104 horsepower and 52.5 pound feet of torque. Top speed was 155 miles per hour.

This example is VIN: ZDM1HB6R7LB001271. The seller acquired it in 1995 from Irv Seaver BMW.

During his ownership, the seller covered roughly 15,000 miles. The odometer shows 21,185 miles.

This bike was featured in Motorcyclist magazine’s On Two Wheels episode when they were given the ability to ride the Ducati Panigale V4 Prototype back in 2018 – it is shown heavily in the first five minutes as the example of where Ducati’s V-Twin sportbike success comes from.

Modifications:
Staintune exhaust.

The wheels are a non-OEM color.

Tail tidy with aftermarket turn signals.

Moto Fizz Tank Pad.

Bar end mirrors.

Battery tender lead.

Known Maintenance History The seller has service receipts from work done at Ducati Newport Beach:
April 2021, 21,120 miles: replace starter solenoid, replace battery, replace oil/filter, replace rear tire. Oil leak diagnosed: “appears to be from base gasket but to verify 100% oil needs to be cleaned from engine and powdered.”
March 2014, 20,408 miles: replace starter motor
March 2013, 20,120 miles: replace regulator/rectifier, reseal cam cover gasket on vertical cylinder
September 2012, 19,611 miles: compression check, leakdown check, clean throttle bodies, clean injectors, replace clutch shift shaft seal, replace fuel regulator, check and adjust all valves, replace battery
September 2011, 19,189 miles: replace tires, replace oil/filter, replace spark plugs, replace fuel lines, replace brake switch, install new tires, replace air filter, replace belts, replace fuel filter.

The seller notes that there is a minor oil leak in the base of the rear cylinder. The sidestand kill switch is non-functional and the sidestand warning light on the dash is always on.
