A year after Suzuki changed the sportbike game with the GSX-R750 in 1985, they rolled out the big brother GSX-R1100. The press and the public ate it up, but that didn’t stop Suzuki from making changes every single year. 1991 brought mechanical upgrades in the form of larger carbs, but the most obvious changes were a series of significant cosmetic changes – the bodywork was restyled and the headlights were covered.
Basic specifications of the ’91 model were 145 horsepower and 497 pounds – heavy nowadays but a featherweight when it was released. A Modern Classic review on Bennetts describes the 1100 Gixxer by saying, “on the open road it was astonishing. Fast and torquey like nothing else I’d ridden, but nimble too, feeling like what I imagined a proper race bike would as it flicked from left to right on the smallest of rider inputs.”
The seller of this example (VIN: JS1GV73A1M2101632, Engine number: V710-114804) acquired it in September 2020 from Iconic Motorbike Auctions. The seller is liquidating his collection of GSX-Rs – he recently sold a GSX-R750 Limited Edition JDM as well as a GSX-R50 here on Iconic.
The previous owner acquired it roughly a year prior and took it on as a restoration project. He noted that “the frame is in its original state, nothing is chrome or polished as often happens to these bikes. Every single part on this bike was replaced with genuine Suzuki OEM parts large and small. Both rims were powder coated to factory color and all bearings and spacers were replaced. Both passenger and driver side grips along with clutch and brake handles are brand new. The front forks were totally rebuilt and obviously got fresh fluid. The clutch plates and master are new, along with HEL stainless lines. I also installed a new clutch cover because of a clutch fluid stain. All three brake master cylinders and calipers were rebuilt. All 3 rotors are factory new. Factory chain, front and rear sprocket replaced. With the fuel system, everything was replaced. The petcock and carburetors were completely taken apart, sonic cleaned, and every internal part (diaphragm, slides, jets, needles, floats, etc.) was replaced. All exhaust gaskets and seals replaced. All footrest guards, rubbers, and shifter/pedal are brand new. I also had 3m protective film wrap on them for future protection. I couldn’t count all the replacement nuts and bolts that have been changed out. Obviously, last but not least, a full tune-up was done, including a new air filter, oil change, new spark plugs, and carburetor sync. The best way to describe what I have done with this bike is that I built it as a display piece. I specifically have a passion for 1991/1992 GSX-R1100s in their pure form from the factory. The only thing not factory on this bike is the front windshield, which I left alone because I feel it fits only with this color scheme.”
The current owner has covered 35 miles with it in his ownership. The odometer shows 20,876 miles.
