The 916 truly needs no introduction, but we’ll defer to VisorDown for our favorite summation:
“Every once in a while a true classic comes along: James Joyce’s Ulysses, The Beatles’ Revolver, Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. Greats one-and-all, to be seen, owned or understood by the discerning and devoted. To the list of timeless classics, we can add Massimo Tamburini’s Ducati 916.”
“Never had a motorcycle provoked such feelings of pure lust or been so coveted. Here was sex made metal, a Sophia Loren in cro-mo steel and alloy. Slim and curvy, the 916 took the breath away from any angle and redefined how a motorcycle could, and should, look.”
“And it wasn’t just skin deep. The four valves per cylinder desmodromic V-twin measured 916cc and produced 114 crankshaft horsepower, with torque from tickover.”
This example is VIN: ZDM1SB8S2VB009041. Per the seller, “This was the last motorcycle I purchased immediately before leaving the U.S. in early 2020, and the bike was in storage in Gilroy between 2020 and a month ago. Purchased from a motorcycle tech in L.A., he had recently moved back to the mainland from Hawaii where he worked in a Ducati/Aprillia motorcycle dealership, and had bought this particular 916 off his boss. After moving back to LA, he found work at a Kawasaki dealership, and had this parked next to a nice H2 when I arrived to pick her up. I’d been on the lookout for an early 916 for some time, to restore back to bone stock taking advantage of some parts I had available from previous builds. Unfortunately, I just didn’t get round to doing anything with this particular bike as I only had it for about two months before relocating out of California at the start of Covid. I’ve driven it a handful of times, it drives about the same as my other 916, suspension and forks needed replacing and resealed when I put her in storage, other than that it was just cosmetic stuff. I did actually buy the full suspension rebuild kit and a few other bits and pieces for this bike, that are stuck in my storage in NorCal which I will try and get sorted out in January, but for now this bike remains a willing project.”
