The supermoto cousin of the Baghira and the Skorpion, the MZ Mastiff was an example of what an international economy can achieve – a East German manufacturer brought together Japanese motors (from Yamaha) and a British design firm (called Seymourpowell) to create something that worked well on paper and on the road.
The international theme continues with the WP rear shock (Netherlands), Acerbis bodywork (Italian), and Grimeca brakes (also Italian).
Packing roughly 50 horsepower, the Mastiff utilizes the single-cylinder engine and electrical systems from a Yamaha XT660.
In their review, MCN summed it up quite well: “The MZ Mastiff is solidly-built and with looks that could launch nuclear missiles, “aggressive” just about sums up the Mastiff. However, it’s a great road bike, easy and huge fun to ride. Perfect pulling power for townies or twisties and tough enough to withstand abuse and the elements. Pleasantly unusual, too. It’s a goodie.”
Manufactured in February of 2000, this example is VIN: SNZ6FE303Y8006061.
The odometer shows 8,458 miles.
We picked this up to try out for a month or so just because they are so rare and we hadn’t seen one in person before. We acquired it from a private party on Craigslist and serviced it before taking it on a few Sunday rides – we changed the oil/filter, flushed the coolant, flushed the brake fluid, replaced the brake lever, installed turn signals, and installed new Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tires.
Modifications:
Keihin FCR39 flatslide carbs.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the photo album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
It is missing the MZ logo on the right side of the tank.
The running light works, but the brake light does not.
The shift lever has sheared and been welded.
It is riding on Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tires with date codes of 3820 and 4920.
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this MZ is offered on a clean California title with planned non-op registration. It would cost $138 to get registration current in California:
