BMW first introduced the R1100R in 1994 as a naked standard model meant to complement full-faired options like the RT and the GS. Like other oil heads in the lineup, it featured tons of modern conveniences, including Telelever front suspension, Paralever rear suspension, optional ABS, and a series of electrical ports for use with accessories.

And here’s the thing: Over the course of the R’s lifetime, BMW made several updates, such as adding a larger fuel tank, improving the suspension and redesigning the instrument cluster.

Performance-wise, the R1100R was good for 80hp and 72lb-ft of torque — more than enough grunt to move its 518-pound (dry) heft. Though it couldn’t be called a sport bike, per se, it handled its size quite well. Between the front wishbone, the rear shaft drive, and the Brembo brakes, it made for an ideal all-rounder that was equally at home on commutes or in the canyons. As MCN found in its review: “The R1100R is an incredibly versatile machine that does anything well except high speed work and track days… [it] handles well in a smooth, slow turning manner.”
