Additional photos of this Ducati 998 are available here for your perusal.

2002 was the first year of the 998, which featured an all new Testastretta motor that produced 123 horsepower (up 11 from the 996). Ducati offered the 998 in three flavors – the base 998, the 998S, and the 998R. In the US, the “S” model got an Ohlins shock and steering damper, carbon fiber belly pan, revised brake calipers, and color-matched mirrors.

But outside of the US, the “S” model also got an up-spec motor with “R” model camshafts and a deeper sump – it was good for a claimed 136 horsepower.

This example (VIN: ZDMH200AA2B018179, Engine #: ZDM998W4B*001459) is production number 895.

The odometer shows 25,134 kilometers (15,617 miles).

Stickers on the bike suggest that this was originally sold in Japan.

This comes out of a Ducati collection we imported from South Africa. We’ve had a bit of trouble identifying exactly what model it is, as it has many non-US “S” model features (deep sump motor, Ohlins steering damper, carbon fiber bellypan), but non-color matched mirrors are from the base model, the tail (which may have been repainted) only says “Ducati,” and the side fairings say “998” and not “998s”. If you have any questions that may help you identify this bike, don’t hesitate to ask us in the Comments section.

It also has Ohlins forks, which were only spec’d on the 998S Bostrom/Bayliss replicas, as well as the 998 Final Edition. Of course, it also could have been added later.

The wheels are not the correct color – they should match the grey of the frame.

Maintenance history is not known, though we believe it went through a restoration at some point in the past. In preparation for the listing, we we had Angel install new timing belts, install a new battery, flush the brake fluid and coolant, replace the spark plugs, change the oil/filter, clean the headlights, remove and repair the lower coolant reservoir, and install new Michelin Pilot Power 2CT tires from 2020.

It is our best guess that this was originally sold as a Japanese 998S that went down on the left side (note the damage to the water pump cover) and had the side fairings/tail replaced or repainted in an incorrect spec.
12-29-21 Update: We just heard from Eric M., a Customer Service Manager at Ducati North America. He states: “VIN ZDMH200AA2B018179 is for a red 2002 998 S that was manufactured on February 8, 2002. ZDMH200AA2B018179 was compliant with the Japan market at the time of manufacture. The engine number at the time of manufacture was ZDM998W4B*001459*
