Like its bigger, more powerful sibling — the 999 — the Ducati 749 was characterized by its distinctive (read: divisive) styling. Penned by Pierre Terblanche, it featured a set of stacked headlights and beefy slab-sided fairing panels that made for a marked departure from its predecessor: the much-adored and ever-classic 748.
Looks aside, the 749 was certainly no slouch from a performance standpoint. It employed many of the same parts as the 999, and even the base model wasn’t that far off from the claimed figures of the previous 916. Of course, the smaller engine couldn’t match that of the roaring 999, but the middleweight Ducati offered a satisfying high-revving riding experience with a characteristically Italian soundtrack.
And here’s the thing: Ducati improved on its efforts with the top-of-the-line “R” model. The bike was heavily upgraded from the factory, with extensive engine work (titanium valves/valve guides/connecting rods, upgraded cams, magnesium head covers, and carbon fiber belt covers), Öhlins suspension (front/rear/steering stabilizer), a slipper clutch, a set of 10-spoke Marchesini forged aluminum wheels, and a larger fuel tank (4.8 gallons).
As VisorDown said in its review: “The 749R makes you feel invincible on track, and allows you to push harder than ever before. So what makes it so good? For a start, the chassis is simply brilliant. The Öhlins front and rear on the R combine with the traditionally superb Ducati chassis to make the bike perfectly balanced in a corner.”
This example is VIN: ZDM1UB3T64B005423. Draped in carbon fiber everywhere this 749R is #249 of 300 units produced for model year 2004.
The odometer shows 1,596 miles.
