In 2005, most dirtbike companies had a 450cc 4-stroke platform on which they offered up motocross, trail, and sometimes even dual-sport options. KTM was one of said companies, though they also mixed things up with similar offerings at the much more unusual displacement of 400cc. Per a Dirt Rider review in 2005, “In the movie Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner’s character is told that if he builds a baseball field, people will come. With KTM, it appears to be somewhat reversed: If people want a specific bike, KTM will build it. The evidence is the 400 EXC.” The EXC was KTM’s Enduro Cross Country bike, which was capable of going just about anywhere you’d want off-road but also offered all the equipment you would need to get a plate so you could connect your favorite trails with the requisite amount of pavement.

The 400 put out about 45 horsepower and the dry weight was less than 250 pounds. Compared to the 450, the 400 has the same bore but a shorter stroke, which lets it rev quicker. The chassis was basically identical between the models.

Dirt Rider continued: “the 400 feels slim and light for a fully off-road-equipped E-start four-stroke. The shorter stroke means that the biggest part of the engine’s rotating mass has less of a gyroscopic effect on the chassis, and the bike flicks back and forth through right/left turns with less input than the 450 or 525 require.”

This example is VIN: VBKEXJ40X5M224330.

The odometer shows 2,283 miles.
