After the legendary 1994 RC45, Honda took a lengthy break from producing a limited-production special for the US market. In fact, it took two decades before Honda would try something similar – the Honda CBR1000RR SP.

Honda built 5,000 units to sell worldwide, only a few hundred of which came to America. For an additional $2,700 ($3,300 for this 2016 model), riders were rewarded with a tremendous amount of upgrades including 43mm Öhlins NIX30 forks (fully adjustable), Öhlins TTX shock (fully adjustable), and Brembo front brakes with four-piston monobloc calipers.

The CBR engine was already improved from previous years with a revised cylinder head, but the SP version was factory blueprinted with “handpicked pistons and connecting rods.” The cylinder heads had improved intake and exhaust flow adding 2.7 ponies for a total of 168hp and 84 lb-ft of torque at 10,500 RPM. As the owner of this machine states “I was shocked…SHOCKED to discover what a gentle giant of performance this bike was. I had never experienced anything so civilized and smooth. Additionally, the engine has some great mods. The piston connecting rods are hand picked during assembly, weighed and balanced for each engine and also made from titanium.”

One area the bike did stand out in was its appearance. With bodywork inspired by the RC211V, line-beam headlight, Miguel Duhamel summed up this bike by saying, “It’s not a bike that Honda just stamped SP on and have given a different paint job. There are definitely significant differences between the two. I love that little extra wink and smile that you get with the SP.” The seller states “The rear sub-frame of the bike differs from the non SP in that it is made of magnesium and not aluminum. There are no mounts for passenger pegs and no passenger seat, just the rear cowl.”

Honda even took things one step further and released the iconic Repsol Edition model — the most coveted of the 1KRR’s. Inspired by Marc Marquez’s 2013 and 2014 MotoGP championships the orange livery also came with Marc Marquez “93” and Dani Pedrosa “26” factory decals. (Included in this sale.) This unique color option was only available for two years, 2015 and 2016. The seller states “there was just something about that Honda, in the Repsol trim that stayed with me.”

Manufactured in December of 2015 this example is VIN: JH2SC5963GK500065. The seller states “back in 2012 I bought my first sport bike. After a few years of my R1 and Ducati ownership and gaining some experience with a couple of seasons of track time, I found this incredible CBR a at a nearby shop. This particular shop did more dirt bike and cruiser business than it did sport bike business. And, in September of 2017, this AMAZING 2016 bike had been sitting, just waiting for me to grab. Purchased from Hollister Powersports in Hollister, CA.”

The odometer shows 504 miles. The seller states “just for kicks one day, I decided to haul the CBR up to Sonoma Raceway with the R6 and try it out for a couple of sessions. I warmed up in the first session on the R6 and it was clear again, that bike was not a good fit for me. Then, I took out the CBR just to see how it felt. I babied it around the track a couple times to get comfy and then I gave it some beans. Without traction control, riding modes or ABS, it was like the bike knew exactly what I was and was not capable of. I immediately and with ease was getting my knee down where I had been struggling for seasons. The geometry of the bike was so much more comfortable than anything I had tried. Riding a 1000cc bike around the track at low revs compared to the screaming R6 was just a much better fit for me at the time. I’m sure I barely woke up the bike as I was very conscious about breaking in the the engine and not wanting to push my own limits. I controlled the bike and the bike simply waited for input from me. Then, it did everything I wanted to do exactly as I wanted to do it. There is no disconnect between the throttle and the engine or between the brake levers and the brake rotors. Everything this bike does, is felt by the rider. You can feel the tires on the ground, you can feel the brake pads wrapping the rotors, and you could feel the fuel injectors streaming gas into the combustion chamber. None of it feels out of control at any time. On this bike, the lack of technology and rider aids is a massive advantage.”

Maintenance:
In preparation for the listing, the seller had us perform a safety inspection. The seller states “suffice it to say, the low mileage on the bike really tells the story. While the bike lived covered and plugged in sitting in my garage, I would keep the fluids fresh and always plan to get back on it. I really thought I’d keep it forever but in the end, family life, a sore back and a few “eh hem” extra pounds around the middle make that less and less likely. It’s time for someone else to enjoy it in their life. I had the break-in service done as well as one additional oil service along with a brake fluid service. Additionally, I replaced the battery 2/23/25.”
