In 2022 Ducati shook the middle weight ADV bike world by upping the ante. They dropped the DesertX into a segment already dripping with options so the all new DesertX had to stand out. Sporting (a claimed) 110 horsepower and 68 lb/ft of torque from a transverse mounted 937cc liquid cooled 11 degree V Twin. The Testastretta power plant is completed with 8 desmodromic valves (four per cylinder) and an indirect electronic fuel injection system. This is mated to a six speed wet gear box. Ducati claims the entire package weighs only 465 pounds without fuel in the tank, however, Cycle World’s real world test revealed a heft of 518 lbs when fully fueled, and as well only 94 hp and 57 tq to the wheels when dyno’ed. Still more power than the KTM890 that the DesertX competes with.
Ducati.com has this to say of the all new 2023 DesertX “Equipped with a 21” front and 18” rear wheel, the new DesertX is designed to handle even the most challenging off-road terrain. Ducati has combined its road expertise with dedicated off-road development to create a responsive, easy-to-handle bike that is at ease on all types of trail and asphalt. Ergonomics, engine, aerodynamics, and electronics, together with an off-road specific chassis, form the base of DesertX. As efficient and technologically advanced as every Ducati, DesertX is robust, reliable and functional, the ideal travel companion for your adventures.”
Cycle World had this to say of the DesertX “Not every potential DesertX owner may know the name Edi Orioli, but they all will feel his 1990 Paris-Dakar win on the Lucky Explorer Cagiva Elefant 900ie. There are so many shapes and angles and colors that recall his historic win in racing from France to Senegal, it’s only natural to imagine yourself flying over sand dunes as Berbers guide camel caravans along ancient trade routes. That Elefant Orioli rode was powered by a 944cc Ducati V-twin, and although the DesertX has a more modern, liquid-cooled powerplant, the family ties are strong. So much that perhaps, if not for Cagiva being held by MV Agusta, it should have been called the Elefant 937.”
