Our buddy Kevin Erion has opened up his private stash of leathers, and we’ll be selling a few suits from some of your favorite Erion Honda AMA riders! This suit was built for Randy Renfrow.
Randy was a 3-time AMA road racing champion (250 GP – 1983, Formula 1 – 1986, Pro Twins – 1989) who was known for his skills in a variety of disciplines. Over his career, he won 17 AMA National events in four different classes, and his success was commemorated with a place in the AMA Hall of Fame:
Per John Ulrich of Road Racing World: “Randy Renfrow was so determined to race, so determined to compete, that when he went through a really bad crash that resulted in one of his thumbs being amputated, he went through a procedure to have one of his big toes removed and sewn in place to serve as his thumb so he could still hold on to the handlebars. That’s determination.”
Renfrow campaigned in AMA 250 GP with Erion Honda in 1998 and 1999 – the first season he earned multiple podium finishes and was named AMA Sportsman of the Year. He announced his retirment from full time racing at the end of that season, though he continued on the following year in a limited capacity – riding in five GP events and taking second place at three of them.
This suit doesn’t appear to have been ridden in, but it looks very similar to what Randy wore in the 1998 season for Erion Racing in AMA 250. Please note that this suit is missing the Erion Racing logo on the arms and back so it likely was an extra that was not needed that year.
Randy unfortunately passed away in 2002 from head injuries sustained in a household fall. Have any Renfrow stories or questions about this listing? Let us know in the comments.
