Description
Additional photos of this Yamaha Mate are available here for your perusal.
The Yamaha Mate 80 was a classic scooter introduced in Japan back in 1965. Over the years, Yamaha revised the model with Auto Lube (oil injection and different engine options, but it was never able to unseat Honda’s Super Cub as the step-through of choice for most riders.
The Mate utilizes a 2-stroke 80cc engine, though Yamaha also offered a “Town Mate” with a 4-stroke engine to try and minimize pollution in urban environments. Per Yamaha’s website, the Mate model name “was chosen from suggestions by the public and the TV commercial that repeatedly called out the name to spirited music was a hit at the time.”
This example is VIN: Y805464385. The seller is not 100% sure what the model year is.
The odometer shows 19,418 kilometers (12,065 miles).
The owner imported this bike from Japan several years ago with the intent of reselling it in the US. He had it running and for sale at the 2019 Barber Vintage Festival. It did not sell there, and due to COVID the bike has been in storage since. At a minimum, it will need a new battery and the carbs cleaned to run. To ride, it would likely also need a full fluid flush and new tires. We have not inspected it.
Modifications:
This Mate appears to be completely stock (yes, including the basket).
