Back in 2014, Yamaha kicked off its ‘Yard Built’ platform in order to showcase the customization potential of its heritage models. From tiny 125s to single cylinder thumpers to streamlined drag bikes, the series has given builders around the world an opportunity to put their talents on full display. Yamaha called the production bikes that came out of this the “Faster Sons” lineup as they were ‘faster sons’ of the old bikes, paying “homage to Yamaha’s rich heritage while being focused on performance for the future.” For Roland Sands Design’s fifth collaboration with Yamaha, they took a stock FZ09 and transformed it into a retro-inspired tracker race bike that they called the “Faster Wasp” (or just the “Wasp”).
As a tribute to Kenny Roberts’ TZ750, RSD had Airtrix refinish the bike in Yamaha’s iconic yellow and black speedblock livery and mounted a set of number plates bearing the legendary racer’s number 2. They also tapped Specialized Coatings for full Cerakote protection.
To unlock the full potential of Yamaha’s 850cc in-line triple, RSD also outfitted the Wasp with a variety of prototype parts:
Hand-fabricated aluminum gas tank.
Hand-fabricated tail section.
Custom seat by Bitchin’ Seat Co.
Hand-fabricated intake scoops.
Hand-fabricated radiator covers.
Hand-fabricated front number plate.
Hand-fabricated front fender.
RSD prototype Clarity timing cover.
RSD prototype rearsets.
RSD prototype rear brake reservoir.
RSD prototype case guards.
RSD prototype chain guard.
RSD prototype axle sliders.
RSD prototype gas cap.
