One of a few bikes from Japan that became known as the “Widowmaker”, the SC500 was Yamaha’s first attempt at building an Open Class motocrosser.
The reputation was earned thanks to a 496cc two-stroke engine that put out a peaky 44 horsepower combined with a frame and suspension that weren’t as capable as the engine was.
After two years Yamaha moved away from the SC500 to the YZ360 with a monoshock, but they also ended up recommending the installation of an ignition condenser as part of “Technical Bulletin No. 348” that was known to smooth out the powerband quite a bit.
