After three years as a mechanic for Harley-Davidson’s factory dirt track team, Steve Storz started a company to supply tuning services and parts for AMA racers trying to win on Harley’s legendary XR750.
He succeeded by creating precise high-performance parts that held up under the stresses of competition: “Racing does not tolerate the imprecise nor does it reward those who place style before function. The work ethic of racing is woven into everything we produce here at Storz Performance. It’s not enough for a part to look good, it must also work well.”
25 years into Storz Performance, the company created a XR-style conversion kit for the 2004+ Sportster with the rubber mounted engine. The improvement in ride quality with these 2004+ Sportsters is tremendous – Motorcycle Cruiser simply asked “where have you been all my motorcycling life?” in their First Ride review. The engine also got a bump in redline and a 15% increase in output, meaning there was more for the rider to enjoy along with their increased comfort. Each part of the Storz kit could be ordered individually, and the finished product shaved an impressive 83 pounds off the original dry weight of 557 pounds (for the 1200).
Typically when you see a Storz H-D, it’s the work of a third party installing kit parts. But this is one of the rare circumstances when Storz installed the kit themselves. The work began in 2005 and was delivered to the original owner in the spring of 2006. It was equipped with almost every option as well as a custom paint job in the distinctive orange/black Harley factory racing colors.
This example is VIN: 1HD1CLP1X4K418473, Engine #: CLP4418473.
The odometer shows 12,550 miles. However, true mileage is unknown.
