Description

Additional photos are available here for your perusal.

Yamaha first introduced the FZR750 in 1987 as a complement to its smaller 600 and larger liter offerings. At the time, the Tuning Fork manufacturer was looking for something that struck a better balance between power and dry weight.

For the engine, Yamaha utilized a liquid-cooled DOHC inline four, canted at 45 degrees and fitted with five valves per cylinder. When mated to a set of 34mm carbs and a six speed-transmission, riders could expect 106hp and 53lb-ft of torque — enough for a 150mph top speed and a 3.3-second 0-60mph time. Japanese versions — like the one featured here — were limited to 77hp. Above all else, the block was renowned for being smooth in delivery and tractable throughout its rev range.

As impressive as the engine was, though, it was the trick Deltabox frame that was really responsible for the ride, paving the way for a technology that is very much the norm today. Riding on a fully-adjustable Kayaba suspension set up with 41mm forks up front and a monoshock at the rear, it made for a chassis that was both “strong and immensely versatile” per Classic Motorbikes’ retrospective.

This example is VIN: 2LM027172.

The odometer shows 6,329 kilometers (3,932 miles).

It was originally sold in Japan, we assume it has been restricted to 77 horsepower.

In preparation for the listing, the seller had us clean and sync the carbs, clean the fuel filter, change the oil and oil filter, replace the battery, and clean the front and rear calipers as well as the master cylinder. Additionally, we stripped the wheels and had them freshly powder-coated.
