When Triumph revived the Scrambler name back in 2006, the model was more of a road bike in disguise than a true off-road-worthy option. In fact, the Hinckley-based manufacturer even went so far as to introduce the “Street Scrambler” for those who wanted to look the part without venturing beyond anything other than groomed dirt roads.
For this reason, some motorcycle enthusiasts consider the Triumph Scrambler a scrambler only in name. This all changed when Triumph introduced the Scrambler 1200 XE and XC in 2019. Both true performance-oriented versions of its retro-styled twin, each bike featured a 1200cc engine making 89hp and 81ft-lbs of torque – a marked increase over their Bonneville and Street Scrambler siblings.
What’s more, the XE came standard with a Showa 47mm inverted fork up front and a set of Öhlins piggyback shocks at the rear, each offering nearly 10 inches of fully adjustable travel. To further prepare the bike for off-road exploits, Triumph stretched the wheelbase, widened the bars, and fitted it with a revamped IMU and six different riding modes. Per Motorcycle News: “It glides over bumps, digs into corners, wheelies off crests and generally flatters you, feeling less like a retro and more like an adventure bike with all its plastics ripped off – nimbler and less clumsy, but oh so capable.”
