Though it was originally introduced in 1994, the Ducati 748 didn’t come to the United States until 1997. That means we already knew what our European colleagues thought of it in advance – and the reviews were glowing. It was almost identical to the 916, sharing everything from styling to even the majority of the bottom end of the engine. The main differences were a narrower rear tire (180 vs 190) and different cylinders/heads. As the pistons were smaller and traveled a shorter distance, Ducati was able to raise the redline to 11,500 rpm. This resulted in 95 horsepower and a power delivery that thrived on revs as opposed to the lazier, torquier nature of the 916.
The slight sacrifice in peak horsepower paid off in even better handling thanks to the reduced weight, and Ducati’s signature trellis frame was complemented by Showa forks, Sachs shock, and Brembo calipers clamping down on 320mm twin discs up front.
This example is VIN: ZDM1SB3R21B009152. The seller purchased the bike July 2014 from a private party in Seattle, Washington. He is selling because he recently purchased a 2005 Ducati 999S.
True mileage unknown. Per the seller, “The original speedo crapped out at 37,403 miles; replaced it with a factory-new unit and matched the mileage to the engine. 42,504 on chassis, 5,461 on engine.”
Maintenance:
The seller states, “5,461 miles on the 853, which was built using factory-new case halves & head assemblies. Full Desmo service at 5,000 miles on engine, belt, valves, coolant & oil. Crank/rods were balanced & assembled by Ben Fox. Cam timing was set at 108/108 with an eprom by Brad Black suited for the engine specs. New Superlite sprockets 14/41 ratio and DID chain. Everything is up to date. I’m the only guy that I’ll let work on my bikes, so the only documentation I have is receipts that I’ve kept over the years for the upgrades.”

“Front brakes have been upgraded to 4-pad axial calipers from 749/999.”
