The Skorpion was an example of what an international economy can achieve – a East German manufacturer brought together Japanese motors (from Yamaha) and a British design firm (called Seymourpowell) to create something that worked well on paper and on the road. It wasn’t a huge commercial success, but nowadays it’s definitely a cult classic.
The international theme continues with the Bilstein rear shock (German), Acerbis bodywork (Italian), and Grimeca brakes (also Italian).
Packing 48 horsepower, the Skorpion utilizes the engine and electrical systems from a Yamaha XT660. It was available in several flavors – the Sport, the Cup, the Replica, the Tour, and the Traveller. At 416 pounds “ready to ride,” as is claimed in the owner’s manual, the Skorpion Tour is a lean and nimble machine.
Manufactured in September of 2000, this example is VIN: SNZ6TE20417506476. The seller purchased the bike two and a half years ago from a private party out of Dallas and states, “I liked them when they came out and was able to get these and satisfy that itch.”
The sale also includes a “parts bike,” VIN: SNZ6TE20417506493.
During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 100 miles. The odometer shows 16,515 miles. From the seller, “The complete bike has 16,000 miles on it, the parts bike has 36,000 miles on it.”
Maintenance:
Per the seller, “Work completed so far consists of a fresh oil and filter change, front and rear brake hydraulics have been flushed with new pads installed, valve clearances were checked and adjusted, chain has been cleaned and lubricated. New Michelin tires front and rear, new battery. I do not know the condition of the engine in the parts bike. The nice one starts and runs fine, but still has a few issues to be ironed out. The rear brake light switch isn’t working and the neutral light and high beam indicator on the instruments are not working. The flash to pass feature on the left switch gear doesn’t work.”
Modifications:
HMF slip on muffler.
“Painted wheels and rear hugger to match bike.”
It is riding on Michelin Pilot Activ tires with date codes of 2915 and 4415.
The sale includes two keys for each bike. The seller also notes, “I have a box of miscellaneous parts; a very nice front fender, original mirrors, two different intake manifolds to convert from two carburetors to one, a custom-made aluminum air filter housing that would accept a K&N style filter, additional rear brake pads and the two carburetors off the parts bike that have been partially disassembled.”
