The GSX-R400 holds a special place in Suzuki history as the very first GSX-R model, predating the now-legendary GSX-R750. Introduced in 1984 for the Japanese market, the 400cc sportbike was designed as a true race replica, evolving from Suzuki’s GSX series of sport tourers into a lightweight, high revving machine aimed at younger riders and licensing regulations. Like its rivals in the fiercely competitive 400cc class, the GSX-R400 received constant development throughout its production run, with changes to frames, engines, and bodywork nearly every year until the model was discontinued in 1996.

By the early 1990s, the GSX-R400 had matured into a highly refined package. The 1990 redesign introduced inverted forks, a new double cradle aluminum frame, and a 4 into 1 exhaust system, while power climbed to around 60 horsepower from the 398cc DOHC inline four. Suspension, braking, and chassis components were all designed to echo Suzuki’s larger GSX-R750, giving the 400 the look and feel of a true superbike in a more compact package.

While it was never officially sold in the United States, the GSX-R400 became a cult favorite in Japan and the UK, where its combination of light weight, sharp handling, and screaming inline four engine made it a staple of the “race replica” era. Today, surviving examples are rare finds on the US market, prized by collectors as both an important chapter in Suzuki’s GSX-R lineage and a unique taste of the Japanese 400cc sportbike wars.
