When Honda first introduced the Grom 125 (MSX125 for those of you outside of the U.S.) back in 2014, the little bike made quite the splash. Some eagerly welcomed it, excited that the historically-practical moto manufacturer was finally ready to have some fun. Others scratched their heads, bewildered as to why Honda would cater to such a seemingly ‘peculiar’ niche. Years later and it’s clear that Honda had the right idea – between the compact size, the high-revving 125cc engine, and the flickable geometry, it’s a bike that has commanded quite the cult following.
Road & Track put it perfectly in their initial review: “The Grom is tiny, gutless, slow, and perfect. It’s the kind of motorcycle that probably made you enjoy riding in the first place… Invariably, it’ll make you enjoy riding again.” As with other small Hondas (like the Ruckus), one of the hallmarks of the Grom lies in its customization potential. So, while the platform is pretty humble out of the box, there’s a thriving aftermarket chock full of performance parts.
2021 saw the addition of a fifth gear, new styling and an HRC-spec race only version like this one here. Traditional safety standards such as ABS, lights, and horn were removed and replaced with a race harness and ECU, HRC body panels and belly pan, track tires, and an up-swept race exhaust. These race-tuned 225 pounders were intended for use in the HRC Grom Cup in Japan or the MotoAmerica Mini Cup in the States.

“I purchased it through Iconic a while back. I’ve had an absolute blast riding it at Apex. It is literally laugh out loud in your helmet fun! A few of my buddies are building Groms because they saw me having so much fun. It always seems to gather a crowd and it blows their minds it’s a true HRC bike. It’s just so cool.
I’m selling it because I’m getting old. Previous orthopedic injuries have caught up with me. Someone is going to get a fantastic little ripper that I’ve had zero issues with. The bike is a blast!”
Maintenance:
The previous owner stated that he has upgraded the bike with a high compression piston ($115), a billet clutch plate and springs ($48), head, throttle body, and manifold porting ($250), a cam ($170), as well as a new spark plug ($8) and intake ($135). He adds that it “will make more HP & Torque at sea level ~16hp. Has mapping switch on left handlebar for sea level and pit lane limiter.”
