After the Monster S4R debuted in 2004, Ducati immediately added to the lineup just a year later with the S2R. The bike borrowed many cues from its older brother like the striking trellis frame, single-sided swingarm, and double-stacked, right-side-only exhaust – but changed things up when it came to the engine by instead featuring a classic air-cooled two-valve.

Beyond that, the S2R still boasted a striking single-sided swingarm and some iconic Ducati colorways.

One of the biggest changes to the model came in the form of the ground clearance; Ducati increased the ground clearance for better cornering, requiring some significant modifications to the frame to accommodate for the routing of the intake ducts. By and large, however, the S2R made itself right at home in the Monster line, offering the premium components that one had come to expect of the Italian company. Some of the features included an inverted 43mm Marzocchi fork, Sachs rear shock with adjustable preload and rebound damping, and dual 300mm floating discs gripped by Brembo four-piston calipers.

As Motorcycle News put it: “The surprise isn’t what the S2R is – the 800 engine and S4R chassis/style are proven. The surprise is how well it all blends together and how affordable it is.

This example is VIN: ZDM1RAAN16B082011. The seller acquired it ten years ago from a private party near Sacramento, California. “I purchased this bike with the intention of commuting in San Francisco. Not long after, my work situation changed and the commute became less practical compared to taking the ferry, so the bike transitioned into more of a weekend and backup rider.”

The odometer shows 14,875 miles.

I purchased this bike for commuting in San Francisco and decided very quickly that was not a very safe way to travel everyday. Kept it because it was way more comfortable to ride and it was way more reliable than all the other bikes I owned. I used to collect 2 strokes and sometime I didn’t have time to tinker and just wanted to ride. I live on a dirt road in Pennsylvania now, sadly my street days are over except the track.”

Maintenance:
The seller provided an invoice from Desmoto-Sport in San Francisco, which states that based on the condition of the spark plugs and cam belts, the 12,000 mile service appears to have been done by the previous owner.
